6.5.5 What Is the Value Proposition for OSS?

The benefits of using OSS are clear access to a large amount of sophisticated and useful code for free or nearly free and, for those applications with the most robust communities, it can be expected that the code will be maintained for many years.

OSS advocates also claim that OSS has fewer defects than closed source code. They quote Eric Raymond (2001) in this regard: “given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow.” Of course, it is not true that OSS is error-free; some is quite buggy. But the research is still wide open on whether open-source code is uniformly better, or worse than closed source code. The truth is, it probably depends on the project.
